Abstract

In tropical climates, energy-efficient building designs are crucial for minimizing operational costs, enhancing thermal comfort, and ensuring environmental sustainability. High cooling and electricity requirements are common in these areas because of the high temperatures, humidity and strong solar radiation. This study explores design strategies that can reduce energy consumption and reduce life cycle costs of operation while providing for comfortable indoor environments. It takes a comparative review approach based on a literature review of passive design, energy-efficient construction materials, natural ventilation, solar shading, high-performance building envelopes, efficient HVAC systems, and renewable energy technologies. The study assesses strategies in terms of energy performance, implementation costs, maintenance needs, thermal comfort and potential financial savings. Special focus is placed on the economy of the combination of passive architectural elements and active energy-management technologies. The analysis highlights the need for building orientation and reflective roofing to consider climate factors, daylighting and the use of efficient cooling systems to decrease the need for mechanical cooling. It also stresses the importance of life-cycle costing for establishing initial costs and operational savings. The study offers a practical approach for energy efficiency, environmentally friendly and affordable architecture in tropical countries for architects, engineers, developers and policy makers. Finally, such integrated design strategies can help to reduce operating costs, enhance occupant comfort and achieve increased sustainability for buildings.
